Privacy Statement
This page explains how friendsofscotland.gov.uk, which is managed by the Scottish Executive, uses any information you give to us, and the ways in which we protect your privacy.
The Data Protection Act
Under the Data Protection Act 1998, we have a legal duty to protect any information we collect from you. We use leading technologies to safeguard your data, and keep strict security standards to prevent any unauthorised access to it. We do not pass on your details to any third party or government department unless you give us permission to do so.
What information do we collect?
We collect four kinds of information from visitors to friendsofscotland.gov.uk: Register an interest in Global Friends of Scotland, Subscribe to Global Friends of Scotland updates, Send an e-postcard and site usage information, from session cookies and log files.
Register an Interest
If you opt to register an interest in the Global Friends of Scotland Initiative, the registration information we collect is: your name, company or organisation, your position, telephone number, email address and the nature of your interest.
A copy of this information is kept securely by the Scottish Executive and our technology supplier, Ednet and will be held for the duration of the Global Friends of Scotland project or until you inform Global Friends of Scotland otherwise. This information is stored to allow us to reply to your registration of interest. This information is also stored on back-up tapes to avoid loss of data.
When you register an interest, we may also share the details you have provided with other Global Friends of Scotland, Government departments or other organisations, only for the purpose of furthering the Global Friends of Scotland project.
Subscribe to updates
You can also subscribe to updates to the friendsofscotland.gov.uk website. The information you supply: your name and email address will be stored as "Register an Interest" above, but will only be used for notifying you periodically of updates to the website. This information will be held for the lifetime of the website, or until you decide to unsubscribe and will not be shared with any other party.
Send an e-postcard
When you send an e-postcard from the friendsofscotland.gov.uk website, no personal details are retained other than your message. By clicking the "send" button you agree to this message being held on a web server, provided by our technology supplier, Ednet. The recipient will receive an email from the address you entered in "your email address" and a URL linking to your message. This message will be held for the duration of 6 months or until the message has been accessed. Once accessed, the message will be deleted after 24 hours.
Site usage information
Log files
Log files allow us to record visitors' use of the site. Ednet puts together log file information from all our visitors, which we use to make changes to the layout of the site and to the information in it, based on the way that visitors move around it. Log files do not contain any personal information.
