Cathie Boyd

Awarded European Woman of Achievement for the Arts 1999, Cathie was also awarded a three year NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts) Fellowship to develop the staging of music through new technologies. Cathie Boyd gained a BA in Dramatic Studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She founded Theatre Cryptic in 1994, producing and directing all productions to date including: Black Over Red based on Anna Akhmatova's Requiem, Electra and Parallel Lines (Fringe First Award). Her work has involved numerous international collaborations and has been seen widely across Europe, South America and Canada.

Cryptic Productions was established in 1997 and it most recently produced an international multi art form Samuel Beckett festival across Glasgow and Aberdeen titled Beckett Time. Cathie is also a Trustee on the Board of Visiting Arts.

Her other directing credits include Faust (Gounod’s) at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh and DSCH (Shostakovich 8th String Quartet) with the Yggdrasil Quartet, Stockholm. Most recently she directed a double bill of a new Simon Holt opera, Who Put Bella In The Wych Elm? and Salvatore Sciarrino for Aldeburgh Festival 2003 and Almeida Opera. With Theatre Cryptic she will direct Tunnel Visions – based on the story of two reclusive brothers and their eccentric behaviour that leads to their demise, for 2004. Future works include Kurtag’s Scene from a novel.
