Tartan Day in Canada, April 6 2006
Tartan Day in Canada, April 6th, has become a yearly event. The concept of "Tartan Day" began at a meeting of the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia on 09 March 1986.
April 6th in Scotland is the date of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which states in part: "...It is in truth, not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself..."
In Canada's Tartan Day, Canadians are encouraged to wear tartan in commemoration of the contributions of Scots and their descendants to the fabric of society. Tartan Day demonstrates how one can rise above hardships and cruelty with faith in God, determination and dedication.

Tartan Week, 1-8 April, New York City
From 1-8 April 2006 New York City hosts a celebration of all that's best about Scotland.
The US Senate designated April 6th as National Tartan Day in 1998 to honour "the outstanding contribution of millions of Scottish-Americans to our great nation" and the House of Representatives passed a similar resolution in 2005.
New York City has celebrated Tartan Day since 1999 and, every year, the number of activities has increased to the point that it has become a Tartan Week.
Throughout Tartan Week 2006 there will be a huge variety of events highlighting the vibrancy of Scottish culture, past and present. From renowned Scottish talents such as Braveheart scriptwriter Randall Wallace and 'Under The Skin' author Michel Faber, who will both deliver exclusive readings, to performances from Evelyn Glennie and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the launch production of a new musical from Scotland's National Youth Theatre, this year's Tartan Week programme is more exciting than ever.
The culmination of the week is the Tartan Week Parade, starting at 2pm and going down the Avenue of the Americas on Saturday 8th April.
