The Boston Scots Charitable Society are celebrating their 350th anniversary this year. On 6th January 1657, The Scots Charitable Society of Boston was established, making it the oldest Scottish society in the New World and ranking them ahead of many venerated institutions in Scotland. It is also the oldest charity still in existence in the USA where the Mayflower only landed in 1620. The society is devoted to the cultivation of personal and social relations of the members, cherishing the associations of the land from which they originated, and inciting among their fellow countrymen a zeal for the welfare of their time honoured traditions.

More information about The Caledonian Society of Oman's Burns Supper – Muscat (Sultanate of Oman)
The three main traditional events of the year celebrated by The Caledonian Society of Oman include a St. Andrew's Ball, a Burns Night and a Summer Ceilidh. "Here in Muscat," the Chieftain, Jamie Irvine-Fortescue, explains, "we stick to tradition. At our Burns Supper, a few welcoming words generally start off the evening and the meal commences with the Selkirk Grace. Our Burns Suppers always feature Haggis. Other components generally include a soup such as Scotch Broth or Cock-a-Leekie and there may be Atholl Brose or cheese and bannocks (oatcakes). Once several traditional speeches are complete, the evening continues with dancing to a live Scottish band until the early hours. The evening then culminates with the company standing, linking hands and singing "Auld Lang Syne" to conclude the programme."
This year, we have invited a young and very talented band from Orkney. "Skalder" were formed in 2006 and have played at many events since then with skill, energy and enthusiasm. They are journeying all the way from Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney, to play at our Burns Supper. The members of the band are:
- Louise Bichan (18) has played fiddle since 1996 and plays in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland
- Jennifer Austin (17) has played piano/keyboard and fiddle since 1996
- Finlay Bichan (15) has played accordion and fiddle since 2000 (also plays bass and drums)
- Kevin Gray (15) has played drums since 2001
The members have played at a variety of traditional music courses and festivals including the Scottish Traditional Music Awards in Edinburgh in 2005, Celtic Connections in Glasgow and the Edinburgh Fiddle Festival in 2006. They have also played at many events in Orkney, including the Folk Festival, various weddings, concerts, fundraisers etc. In addition, two of them teach classes at the Orkney Traditional Music Project.
They will also be playing 'afternoon entertainment' on the beach at a local company beach club on Friday 26th where the temperature is a pleasant 25 degrees C! Here, they will play a selection of traditional Scottish music and their own compositions. In addition, they will play some Ceilidh music for those that wish to dance 10 ft away from sand and sea. . . .
They are the youngest Ceilidh band ever to visit Oman and they will be an inspiration to all young music enthusiasts who hear them play here in Muscat!
