Tartan Day
Saturday, 14th April 2007
Hyland Hills Golf and Entertainment Complex, 96th and Sheridan (9620 Sheridan Blvd.), Westminster, CO 80030
Tartan Day in Colorado celebrates its 11th year. In those years, the state has adopted an official tartan, and events have increased, both in the Denver area, and across Colorado.
We welcome everyone with an interest in Scotland, and all Celtic nations, people and cultures, to join us in celebrating our heritage and our connection as Americans.
It's been said that Scotland's greatest export has been her people. Tartan Day was originally conceived as a day to celebrate Scotland's cultural and historical contribution to the world, wherever Scots immigrated. Also, we invite all people and all cultures that have embraced the Tartan to join with us in celebrating family, community, nation, heritage and mankind's need for connection.

New York
New York Tartan Week
New York City hosts a celebration of all that's best about Scotland in April 2007.
The US Senate designated April 6th as National Tartan Day in 1998 to honour "the outstanding contribution of millions of Scottish-Americans to our great nation" and the House of Representatives passed a similar resolution in 2005. The significance of April 6th dates back to the 1320 signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, which was the model for the American Declaration of Independence.
New York City has celebrated Tartan Day since 1999 and, every year, the amount of activities here has increased to the point that it is now referred to as Tartan Week.
Throughout Tartan Week 2007 there will be a huge variety of events, most of them FREE, highlighting the vibrancy of Scottish culture, past and present.
And it all kicks off with an uplifting ceremony on Saturday, 31st March at the Scottish Village – the heart of Tartan Week activities. The Scottish Village, resident in Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal from March 31st-8th April, is open throughout the day for New Yorkers to experience a real taste of Scottish culture and find out more about the amazing vacation possibilities Scotland has to offer.
Scottish Village events are free and include live music, cookery demonstrations and fashion shows.
Other exciting events include the 10k Scottish Run in Central Park on Sunday 1st April, Whisky Live at Pier 60 on April 4th and the fabulous Dressed to Kilt fashion show, an evening of fashion and fun showcasing contemporary Scottish style on Tartan Day, April 6th.
The culmination of April's Scottish Celebrations is the Tartan Week Parade, starting at 2pm and going down the Avenue of the Americas on Saturday 14th April.

Tartan Day in Canada, April 6 2007
Tartan Day in Canada, April 6th, has become a yearly event. The concept of "Tartan Day" began at a meeting of the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia on 09 March 1986.
April 6th in Scotland is the date of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, which states in part: "...It is in truth, not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom – for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself..."
In Canada's Tartan Day, Canadians are encouraged to wear tartan in commemoration of the contributions of Scots and their descendants to the fabric of society. Tartan Day demonstrates how one can rise above hardships and cruelty with faith in God, determination and dedication. For further details please see the following: Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia.

Australia
Australian National Tartan
It is with great pleasure that the President and members of the Bundanoon Highland Gathering committee announce that the new National Australian Tartan will be launched by the Chieftain of the Day, The British High Commissioner the Rt. Hon. Helen Liddell. (See entry: The 30th Bundanoon Highland Gathering, Saturday 28 April 2007)
This new tartan was the brainchild of Mrs Betty Campbell of Canberra who saw the need for Australia to have its own official, accredited and recognised National Tartan. Mrs Campbell consulted with and had the total cooperation of Mr Kerry Morcombe from the Protocol department of the Federal Government in Canberra.
Mr Morcombe stated that "European settlers to Australia looked for symbols to represent the spirit and attitudes of their new land and its colonial settlements. They desired new symbols as a way to bury their dark convict past and replace it with the promise of a bright future".
The tartan is still seen as one of the most enduring symbols of kinship, which gave every clan a sense of belonging, so the concept of the Australian National Tartan was initiated. What better way than to embrace a symbol that has existed for hundreds of years – "The Tartan". Colours that depict our country mixed with history and ones that would be accepted by the Protocol Department of the Federal Government as in the final analysis the Government would have the say in accepting this as the official Australian National Tartan.
Colours: Red, White, Blue, Green, Gold and Black.
Red, White and Blue – these colours stem from our National flag and from the time that Captain James Cook first raised the flag (Union Jack) on Australian soil.
The six white stripes represent the Southern Cross constellation, which is unique to this hemisphere. This also includes our Federation or Commonwealth Star.
Red and White stripes represent the Red Cross of St George (England) on a white background.
White Diagonal cross represents St Andrew (Scotland) on a dark blue background.
Red Diagonal cross represents St Patrick (Ireland).
Green and Gold were formally proclaimed by the Australian Government as National colours in 1984 after many requests were made to have traditional sporting colours.
The Black stripes in the tartan represent Australian's early beginnings as a convict settlement – a dark area of our history.
These are the reasons for the colours chosen, the proportion of colours the set in the pattern that has been designed are:-
The blue and green colours have the greater proportion within the sett. This concept was taken from nature.
As Australians look out we see mostly blue skies and green trees, so it is these two colours chosen for the background of the tartan.

The 30th Bundanoon Highland Gathering
Saturday, 28th April 2007
Bundanoon Oval, NSW Southern Highlands, Australia
Founded 1976 the Gathering offers a street parade, over 20 pipe bands, Scottish dancers, Scottish fiddle music, clan gatherings, a ceilidh – and at least 130 stallholders selling everything from Highland shortbread to tartan bonnets. You can have a go at tossing the caber, putting the shot, throwing the hay (ladies can play too) – or you can toss haggis, eggs or water-filled balloons; or you can wield a 'broadsword' with the Highland Cavaliers, and compete in the kilted dash – wearing tartan, of course. Only the bold and brave will attempt the weight-over-the-bar but everyone cheers the Tartan Warriors as they lift the Bundanoon stones in a race against time. The day ends with moving performances by the massed bands and the lone piper.
Bundanoon raises funds for charitable and community projects. Around 20,000 people visit each year making Brigadoon the largest yearly celebration of Scottish culture in the Southern Hemisphere.
