CHICAGO

Scottish Writing in Chicago
MLA 2007: 27-30 December, Chicago

The Scottish Writing Exhibition is coming back to the US later this month, with lots that's new. The Association for Scottish Literary Studies will be in Chicago from 27-30 December for the Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention.

Scotland can boast a cutting-edge literary culture that includes writing in English, Scottish Gaelic, and Scots language. For the MLA in Chicago, Dr Christine Robinson, the director of Scottish Language Dictionaries, will be focusing on the Old Norse influence on the Scots language in 'A Moorkavie oot o the North: Old Norse Weather Words in Scotland'. This paper will be part of the Scottish Studies session 'Patterns in Time: The Scottish Nordic Synergy', taking place on Saturday 29 December. To find out more about this and other Scottish sessions scheduled for the MLA, be sure to visit the MLA 2007 page.

This programme is aimed at encouraging American students to come and study in Scotland - on completion of a course, they are eligible to stay in Scotland for a further two years to live and work. For more details on the exhibition and the Fresh Talent Initiative, see www.scottishwriting.org.uk

New Year's Eve Cruise
31 December 2007

Take to the Thames this New Year's Eve and see in 2008 in style with a champagne and dinner cruise, followed by live jazz and a disco. Bateaux London are offering a superb midnight cruise including a three-course dinner, live jazz and the chance to count down to 2008 as fireworks explode along the river.

Dinner cruises are a brilliant experience whether you are a visitor or have lived in London all your life. Our city is magical by night and the route goes via Tower Hill, past the Palace of Westminster, all the way to the Dome and back. Plus, on New Year's Eve the sky should be alive with fireworks. A beautiful, unforgettable way to see in the New Year with family or close friends.
